A remake of British crime drama Prime Suspect and a Vancouver edition of the Real Housewives reality franchise are among the shows Shaw Media will debut this fall.

Shaw is parent company of Global TV and of specialty networks such as Showcase, History TV, Slice and HGTV.

The Global prime-time lineup includes six new dramas and six new comedies, including Prime Suspect, with Maria Bello playing the tough, female detective leading an all-male precinct. Award-winning actress Helen Mirren was the well-regarded lead of the original British version.

Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame returns to TV with Ringer, portraying a woman who takes over the identity of her estranged twin sister.

Real Housewives Vancouver is planned for the Slice specialty network, bringing the plastic surgery and over-the-top dilemmas of a bevy of West Coast beauties. Slice also will create Intervention Canada, a new version of the drug and alcohol rehab reality show .

Dramas planned for Global's prime time in the 2011-12 season include:

  • The Firm: a small-screen adaptation of the John Grisham novel, shot in Toronto and co-produced by Global and NBC.
  • The 2-2: the story of six rookie NYPD cops, in a series executive-produced by Robert De Niro.
  • Combat Hospital: A Canadian-made series based on the lives of the medical and military personnel at the NATO Multinational Medical Unit at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan.
  • Bomb Girls: A Canadian series about young women who are recruited to make bombs during the Second World War.
  • Harry's Law: a series starring Kathy Bates as a criminal defence lawyer operating out of a shoe store.
  • Parenthood: a series about the modern challenge of raising kids, starring Peter Krause of Six Feet Under and Lauren Graham of Gilmore Girls.

Harry's Law and Parenthood previously made their debuts on U.S. network NBC.

Canadian series Rookie Blue returns for a second season on Global. U.S. shows Bones, Family Guy, Glee, The Good Wife, House, NCIS, The Office, The Simpsons and Survivor also are back on the network.

New comedy offerings include How to Be a Gentleman, a co-production with CBS about an out of touch etiquette columnist who is ordered to give his writing a sexy twist by his editor, played by Kids in the Hall alumnus Dave Foley.

Global also will have the U.S. series:

  • Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea.
  • Animated series Allen Gregory.
  • I Hate My Teenage Daughter.
  • Animated series Napoleon Dynamite.

On Showcase, Canadian scripted series include a second season of Lost Girl, about a supernatural seductress; Haven, a Nova Scotia-shot fantasy series; and Toronto-shot police drama King, starring Amy Price-Francis.

Shaw Media has also backed several miniseries that will air on Showcase and Global. They include Titanic, about the doomed ship, and World Without End, an eight-hour special based on Ken Follett's bestseller.
