A high-def film capturing Christopher Plummer's celebrated turn in Barrymore is slated for release in the fall.

In late January, the 81-year-old Plummer reprised the starring role in the two-man William Luce play for a limited run at Toronto's Elgin Theatre. The production officially ends Wednesday.

Film and TV director Erik Canuel, whose credits include Bon Cop, Bad Cop, Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures and episodes of Flashpoint, will film Plummer during a special, additional performance of Barrymore on Friday.

The forthcoming film — set to feature footage shot with multiple high-definition cameras — is slated for release this fall and will be broadcast on cable channels HBO Canada, Movie Central and The Movie Network.

Plummer first performed Barrymoreabout famed actor John Barrymore of the U.S. acting dynasty — to widespread acclaim at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in 1996.

He followed by taking the play on the road to several U.S. cities. It eventually landed on Broadway, where it earned the Canadian acting icon his second Tony Award.

Several of Plummer's recent stage endeavours have been filmed and screened in movie theatres, including his celebrated Stratford turns as Prospero in The Tempest in 2010 and as Caesar in Caesar and Cleopatra in 2008.
