Singer-songwriter Steven Page has tapped into some of his past experience as a touring musician for his newest gig: host of a food and travel show.
Debuting Tuesday, The Illegal Eater follows Page as he travels to different cities in the U.S. and Canada to partake in "underground" food experiences, from secret burgers sampled by invitation only to pop-up (and unlicensed) ethnic food stands to sipping moonshine on a farm.
"I had always said to people if I was ever approached to [host a TV show], I think food would be the only thing I would focus on," the former Barenaked Ladies singer told Matt Galloway, host of CBC's Metro Morning.
"I'm a musician. I’ve travelled for 25 years around the world and the gateway to understand a city is through its food," he continued.
Page, who also wrote, produced and performs the show's theme song, visits a host of cities over the course of the series, including Los Angeles, Dallas, New Orleans, Toronto, Chicago, Halifax and Brooklyn.
The Illegal Eater airs on the Travel & Escape network.
In the attached audio, Page talks to Metro Morning about the new show while continuing his day job in music.
