R. Kelly’s twisted tale of sex, lies and deceit Trapped in the Closet may be headed to Broadway.
The singer and actor announced Monday that he’s had an offer to bring his hip hop opera, initially released as a series of videos, to the New York stage.
"To transform it into a Broadway version, that's what I'm working on," he told a packed house at the Sunshine Theater in New York.
At the same time, he teased the audience with a new instalment of the video story, which stars Kelly as Sylvester, a man who wakes in the bed of another man’s wife and is trapped in the closet when the husband comes home.
The video series started in 2005 and until now had 23 chapters, which were released either online or as a DVD. Each features Kelly himself singing as the plot gets more twisted and crazy.
"I'm just having a lot of fun. I don't have a job, so I sit in the studio all day and think of stuff to do and this is just something stupid I've done that's been successful for me," he said on Monday.
It has been five years since Kelly last released a chapter, but he promised the audience he has dozens more in the works.
As is the case with each of the videos, the latest chapters end with a cliffhanger. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet gets wide release on internet channel IFC on Friday, Nov. 23.
