Piers Morgan, seen in Pasadena, Calif., in 2010, will interview Oprah Winfrey for the debut of his new CNN show.

Brash British media personality Piers Morgan is itching to jump into the prime-time news fray this month, announcing that he has landed Oprah Winfrey as his first guest on his forthcoming CNN talk show.

Piers Morgan Tonight, which debuts Jan. 17, will feature the talk show queen and new cable network head as its first interview subject, he said on Thursday.

Morgan revealed that he had conducted his interview with Winfrey — who launched her new Oprah Winfrey Network cable channel Jan. 1 — this week in California.

The former British tabloid newspaper editor, TV host and America's Got Talent  judge has vowed to be polarizing in his interviews and more competitive with shows on rival networks such as Fox News Channel and MSNBC, both of which have beaten CNN in ratings.

"I'd like to get to the position … where the butt-kicking is reversed," he said.

Morgan replaces longtime radio and TV broadcaster Larry King, who taped the final edition of his 25-year-old interview show Larry King Live in mid-December.
