Canadians Alex Cuba and Nelly Furtado were among the winners Thursday night at the Latin Grammy Awards gala in Las Vegas.

Singer-songwriter Cuba, who is based in B.C., earned the trophy for best new artist for his self-titled third album. He was also a nominee in the category of best male pop vocal album.

Last spring, the same record saw Cuba nominated for his third Juno Award for best world music album.

Cuba also shared in Victoria native Furtado's Latin Grammy accolades, having co-written more than half the songs on her Spanish-language album Mi Plan, which picked up the award for best female pop vocal album.

Cuba said the two Canadians partied after their wins.

"We've been celebrating ever since. I went to bed at like five in the morning," Cuba told The Canadian Press on Friday.

Top winners Thursday night included Mexican pop group Camila, which took record of the year for their song Mientes, and Dominican-born Juan Luis Guerra, whose A Son De Guerra was named album of the year.

The Latin Grammy gala was hosted by actor and comedian Eugenio Derbez and actress and singer Lucero at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The annual awards show recognizes music recorded in either Spanish or Portuguese from anywhere in the world.
