Bryan Adams, seen performing in 2008, will join Andrea Bocelli and other artists for a Johannesburg concert to close the World Cup tournament in July. (Albert Gea/Reuters)Canadian rocker Bryan Adams and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will help wrap up the forthcoming FIFA World Cup with performances in a July concert, organizers have announced.
Adams, recognized with the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award at the Juno Awards gala earlier this month, will take the stage alongside Bocelli and other artists such as South African soprano Pretty Yende for an event titled Celebrate Africa, the Grand Finale.
The concert will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city, on July 9 — two days before the World Cup's final soccer match.
Kickoff concert controversy
As previously announced, the World Cup Kickoff concert will feature international artists such as Alicia Keys, Shakira and the Black Eyed Peas as well as African acts like Angélique Kidjo, the Parlotones and Vieux Farka Touré. Organized by the Los Angeles-based event producer Control Room, the concert is slated for June 10 — a day before the World Cup officially gets underway.
After the initial concert lineup was announced in March, the South African music community and the country's ministry of arts and culture protested over the lack of African artists to be featured.
This month, concert organizers agreed to increase the number of local acts on the bill.
Proceeds from the opening concert are earmarked for a charity initiative building educational, health care and sports training centres in disadvantaged communities across Africa.
