Buffy Sainte-Marie won further accolades this weekend, taking a quartet of trophies at the 11th annual Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, part of the greater Canadian Aboriginal Festival celebrations.

The 67-year-old singer-songwriter swept the categories for which she was nominated at the Hamilton, Ont., gala on Friday: female artist, songwriter, album (Running for the Drum), and single (No No Keshagesh).

Saskatchewan-born, Hawaii-based Sainte-Marie was also recently honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Aboriginal Peoples' Choice Music Awards. She is already an officer of the Order of Canada and an inductee into Canada's Walk of Fame.

Art Napoleon was also a multiple winner at the Aboriginal Music Awards, winning best country album and best folk album for Siskabush Tales and for the track Little Molly. Napoleon is a singer-songwriter from Northern B.C. who tours as a soloist but also with the band the Travelling Suns.

The award in the blues category went to Pappy John Band for Havin' A Good Time Now, which won over B.C.'s Inez.

  • Best female traditional/roots artist: Terry-Lynn Williams-Davidson, Lalaxaaygans Beautiful Sound.
  • Best group: Digging Roots.
  • Best video: Shane Yellowbird, Life Is Calling My Name.
  • Best rock album: Lucie Idlout, Swagger.
  • Best traditional powwow album: Whitefish Bay Singers, Whitefish Bay Singers.
  • Best powwow contemporary album: Northern Cree, True Blue.
  • Best instrumental album: Arvel Bird, Tribal Music Suite: Journey of a Paiute.
  • Best rap or hip hop album: Lakota Jones, Beautiful.
  • Best rap or hip hop video: Shawn Bernard, On the Rise.

A number of awards were also presented at a dinner gala at the Hamilton Convention Centre on Thursday night.
