Boyzone member Stephen Gately, left, died of natural causes, an autopsy showed. Fellow band members, from left, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch, Ronan Keating and Mikey Graham are shown with him in May 2008. (Matt Dunham/Associated Press)Boyzone star Stephen Gately died as a result of a pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs, according to a Spanish court.
The Superior Tribunal in the Balearic Islands, where the Irish boy band singer died Saturday, released autopsy results Tuesday.
The court ruled he died of natural causes and added that there were no signs of violence on his body.
A report in NME magazine, a music publication, said Gately had been drinking the night before and might have choked on his own vomit.
Gately, 33, was on vacation with his spouse, Andrew Cowles, on the holiday island of Mallorca. The couple married in 2006.
His body will be released so he can be flown to Ireland for burial.
Boyzone members Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch released a statement Sunday saying they were "completely devastated by the loss of our friend and brother, Stephen."
"We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more," the statement said.
Formed in 1993, Boyzone sold millions of records and had six No. 1 singles on the British charts, including All That I Need and a cover of the Bee Gees' Words.
Gately also went solo and appeared in stage musicals, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The band reunited in 2008.
