Singer-songwriter Joel Plaskett is the one to beat at the upcoming Canadian Folk Music Awards, with a leading four nominations for the fledgling musical honour.

The Halifax-based recording artist, who won raves and accolades for his recent triple album Three, will compete for best contemporary album, solo artist of the year, producer of the year and a category billed "pushing the envelope."

Other multiple nominees include Montreal group OktoEcho, Toronto's Sultans of String, and singers Suzie Vinnick and Colette Cheverie (from Toronto and East Point, P.E.I., respectively).

A full list of nominees will be available on the Canadian Folk Music Awards website.

This year's ceremony will have a focus on fiddle music and feature performances by performers Les Charbonniers de L'Enfer, April Verch, Old Man Luedecke, Yonder Hill, Catarina Cardeal & Mike Siracusa and Valdy.

Several of this year's nominees are also slated to participate in a concert at the National Arts Centre on the eve of the awards gala.

Established in 2005, the annual awards celebrate and promote the range of folk and roots music being created in Canada today.

The fifth annual Canadian Folk Music Awards gala will take place at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau on Nov. 21.
