Brockman was on his motorcycle and collided with a converted ambulance near Kirk Michael in the Isle of Man. He was taken to Nobles Hospital but died from his injuries shortly after. An investigation into the crash is continuing.
Brockman joined the English post-punk band as a full-time member in 1989, the same year that the band's first drummer, Pete De Freitas, died in a similar motorcycle crash.
Brockman was known to fans as the "Fifth Bunnyman," and he contributed to their self-titled 1987 album and Reverberation in 1990. In addition to playing with the band he formed the dance duo BOM with Spiritualized's Damon Reece.
His music will be on Echo & The Bunnymens new album, Fountains, which comes out next month.
The Bunnymen paid tribute to Brockman stating: "Our thoughts are with his wife, family and friends," on their official website.
"Jake was always a classic bike enthusiast, he loved sailing ... Music was central to Jake's life," his family and wife Sally Mundy said in a statement.
Brockman was born in Borneo and studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He previously worked as a sound recordist for projects at the BBCs natural history unit.
