Montreal's Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Banff Centre, the Calgary Philharmonic and the Edmonton Folk Festival are among the cultural groups who saw private donations to their endowment funds partially matched by the federal government on Friday.
Heritage Minister James Moore, joined by a host of arts officials, unveiled the news in Montreal on Friday. MPs acting on his behalf made city-specific announcements in Quebec City, Banff, Calgary, Edmonton and Regina.
The match-funding is an annual event drawing from the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program, under its endowment incentives component.
As part of this year's initiative, the federal government is providing 72 cents to every dollar donated by the private sector to each organization's endowment or foundation fund. The total contribution equals nearly $6 million.
The program is designed "to encourage further donations and ensure that these organizations continue to enrich our lives for many years to come," Moore said in a statement.
The Montreal area was the beneficiary of the largest sum, with about $4.2 million dispersed to a dozen cultural groups. The largest individual amounts were also earmarked for Montreal: Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra will each receive $1.4 million.
A trio of Quebec City organizations will see nearly $54,000 from the program, while the Banff Centre for Continuing Education receives about $948,000.
Two Calgary organizations will see a boost of $339,000, while nine Edmonton groups are set to receive $385,000 in match-funding. Regina's Globe Theatre Society rounds out the list with $3,616.

FILM REVIEW: Men in Black 3 by Eli Glasner May. 25, 2012 9:46 AM Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back in the action sequel Men in Black 3, a third instalment of a series now 15 years old. Though new addition Josh Brolin manages some amazing mimicry as a younger version of Jones, the story doesn't measure up to the weird and wonderful charms of the original, says film reviewer Eli Glasner.
