The Pax Christi Chorale, a Mennonite choir based in Toronto, is hoping to build a new collection of Canadian hymns by sponsoring a competition for new religious music.

The choir, with 80 members of diverse backgrounds, has put out a call for new compositions set to a hymn text from Canadian creators.

Composers can enter more than one hymn.

First prize is a modest $350, but the bonus for the top three works is to see them performed.

"Our objective with this competition was to generate a whole new collection of Canadian hymns," Laura Adlers, general manager of the choir, said Tuesday.

The choir, created in 1987, plans to perform the works at its Fanfare of Canadian Hymns on Oct. 26 at Grace Church on-the-Hill in Toronto.

Pax Christi Chorale is led by artistic director Stephanie Martin, an assistant professor at York University, and has recorded three CDs — Rejoice! Seasons of the Spirit, and Buxtehude SuperConcert.

The choir was a semi-finalist in the 2008 CBC National Choral Competition.
