Britney Spears has apologized to her fans in Vancouver after the 27-year-old pop diva interrupted her own concert by leaving the stage Wednesday night.

The incident was described as a "brief pause in Britney's set," in a statement on the performer's website.

"Crew members above the stage became ill due to a ventilation issue."

Spears walked off the GM Place stage after performing several songs Wednesday night, citing smoke in the air. She returned approximately 15 to 20 minutes later after the smoke had cleared.

An announcement broadcast at the concert reportedly complained of smoke bothering the performers, including Spears. A spokesperson for Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment later said that the smoke had been from cigarettes and not marijuana.

It is illegal to smoke inside the venue.

Spears is in the midst of a career comeback after personal troubles sidelined her musical career for the past few years.

She began her current U.S., Canadian and U.K. tour last month to promote her latest album, Circus.
