A Los Angeles guitarist has filed a lawsuit against Coldplay, accusing the chart-topping British band of plagiarizing one of his songs on their latest, Grammy-nominated album.

Joe Satriani, 52, filed a copyright infringement suit in Los Angeles federal court, claiming that Coldplay's track Viva La Vida includes "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental song If I Could Fly, according to court documents.

Upon the new Coldplay release this past summer, some online music discussions also mentioned similarities between the two tracks.

Satriani is seeking a jury trial and is calling for damages as well as "any and all profits" related to the alleged copyright infringement.

He filed the suit on Thursday.

A day earlier, the award-winning band scored seven Grammy nominations for their latest hit album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, which the band released in June.
