Stars of the Metropolitan Opera in New York will recreate classic productions and give a foretaste of future shows at the 125th-anniversary gala planned for March 15.

Canadian tenor Ben Heppner will appear with Deborah Voigt in the final scene of Wagner's Siegfried, looking forward to a future performance.

Placido Domingo, celebrating the 40th anniversary of his debut with the Met, will be a featured performer, singing a duet from Simon Boccanegra.

The Met released details of the performances and stars for the gala on Tuesday.

The evening includes 26 staged scenes with projections, including four excerpts from Gounod's Faust, the opera that opened the Met on Oct. 22, 1883.

Sopranos Natalie Dessay, Renee Fleming and Angela Gheorghiu, tenors Juan Diego Florez and Marcello Giordani and mezzo-sopranos Stephanie Blythe and Waltraud Meier are among the singers who have agreed to take part.

Other highlights:

  • René Pape singing the death scene from Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov.
  • Stephanie Blythe as Amneris in a duet from Aida.
  • Mariusz Kwiecien in an aria from Don Giovanni.
  • Three tenor arias from Puccini operas saluting the productions of Franco Zeffirelli.
  • C'est toi...c'est moi from Carmen with Meier and Roberto Alagna.

Projections will include images of great Met history such as the proscenium of the old Met Opera House, playbills, archival photos, original set designs, and pieces of scenery.

"Joined by some of the great artists of today, we will pay tribute to the Met's glorious history, touching on legendary moments we all wish we had heard, and reliving some whose memory we treasure," conductor James Levine said in a statement. "It's sure to be fascinating."
