The reunion tour of The Police will end this summer in New York City, with a benefit concert to support the city's public television stations.

The band — singer/bass player Sting, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers — made the announcement late Tuesday.

The band split in 1984 and launched a reunion tour last May in Vancouver which has so far grossed more than $171 million US and been seen by more than 1.5 million people.

"We kicked off our very first American tour at CBGB's in 1978 and this summer, 30 years later, our journey will come full circle as we play our final show here in New York City," The Police said in a statement.

"We are honoured to partner with public television and have a deep respect for their commitment to arts and culture."

The exact location and date still have to be worked out. Their last concert listed, so far, is Aug. 5 at the Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, N.Y.

The Police, whose many hits include Roxanne, Every Breath You Take and Message in a Bottle, rocked South America, Japan, Australia and Europe.

Sting has said he believes it will be the group's final bow and there will not be another tour.

Tuesday's announcement was made in tandem with the group's donation of $1 million US to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's initiative to plant a million trees in the city by 2017. The city matched the contribution.
