Marsalis, Pink Martini headline Edmonton Jazz Festival

Jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, shown in September 2006, is a headline act for the Edmonton International Jazz Festival. (Canadian Press)Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and Oregon-based orchestra Pink Martini are the headline acts for this year's Edmonton International Jazz Festival.
The festival, scheduled for June 20-29, announced its program Tuesday.
Artists from Canada, the U.S., Cuba, Portugal, Finland and Poland will be performing a range of jazz from big-band to bebop.
Among the featured performers are Toronto singer Molly Johnson, jazz guitarist John Scofield, and master saxophonist Dave Liebman.
Pink Martini, a 12-person orchestra, combines jazz of the 1940s and '50s with a multicultural repertoire that draws on sounds from India, the Middle East and Africa.
Marsalis, director of jazz at New York's Lincoln Center, is a pre-eminent American composer and trumpet player.
The opening night gala concert June 20 features Edmonton's Black Heritage Pioneer Singers and Victoria's Dixieland Express Jazz Band with singer Rollanda Lee.
The Edmonton Jazz Orchestra will perform with 2007 Juno Award-winning Latin jazz pianist Hilario Duran.
