Pop-punk princess Lavigne picked up the best solo artist award while her peppy tune Girlfriend was named most addicting track.

Furtado's funky, chart-topping album Loose took the album of the year honour.

Timberlake, who dominated last year's awards ceremony and was this year's most nominated artist, walked away from the evening empty-handed.

Many eyes were on U.K. singer Amy Winehouse, who cancelled a spate of performances in August amid rumours of drug and alcohol problems.

The singer won the MTV artist's choice category but accepted the honour with a single word: "Thanks." Shortly afterward, she took to the stage again to perform, but shocked many with an unsteady rendition of her song Back to Black.

Other performers throughout the evening included Lavigne, Pete Doherty and his band Babyshambles and U.S. rockers the Foo Fighters.

The night's other winners included:

  • Linkin Park (best band).
  • 30 Seconds to Mars (best rock band).
  • French electronic duo Justice (video star for D.A.N.C.E., best French act).
  • British rock trio Muse (best live act, best Irish and U.K. act).
  • Rihanna (best urban performance).

The show was hosted by U.S. rapper Snoop Dogg, who — like hosts in previous years — donned a series of different outfits throughout the program, including lederhosen and a kilt.

Established in 1994, the awards are meant to reflect more European tastes in music. However, it's often North American artists with international profiles who dominate the ceremony.
