A concert for peace in the West Bank, headlined by Canadian rocker Bryan Adams, has been cancelled because of security concerns.

The concert was to be held simultaneously in the town of Jericho along with one in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Oct. 18.

"Extremist ideologists have threatened our participants in Jericho, and we felt it is our responsibility not to play with their lives," said Daniel Lubetzky from OneVoice, a New York-based organization that is calling for Palestinian and Israeli politicians to hammer out a deal on a Palestinian state within Israel.

OneVoice announced a two-concert spectacular headlined by Adams and beamed live via satellite to Ottawa, Washington D.C. and London.

Both concerts were to be free but music fans would have to sign a petition first.

The events are part of OneVoice's campaign to collect one million signatures urging an agreement on a Palestinian state living in peace with Israel.

Lubetzky said the Tel Aviv concert is still going ahead.

"It is now all the more important for the people in Israel to speak with twice as loud a voice," he said.

"We plan to continue representing the voice of moderate Palestinian and Israeli citizens who want an end to the conflict through a two-state solution."

The 47-year-old Adams — who hit it big with singles such as Heaven, Summer of '69 and (Everything I Do) I Do It For You  —  was slated to begin the evening at the soccer stadium in Jericho and then finish the night with a performance in Tel Aviv.

Several Hollywood stars are expected to appear during the concert through a video link to proclaim their support for OneVoice.
