Blues legend Etta James, 69, is in hospital after suffering complications following abdominal surgery, said her manager.
The singer was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after she had abdominal surgery in mid-June, revealed Lupe De Leon on Wednesday.
James was slated to tour with BB King and Al Green this summer but will be unable to make those dates, at least until late August said De Leon. Singer Chaka Khan will be filling in.
"If it had been left solely up to her, she would have checked herself out of the hospital and started the tour regardless," said the singer's manager.
"However, her doctor advised that were she to do so, it would put her at very great risk."
James, who kicked a heroin addition in the 1960s, broke into the music world after becoming a mainstay on Johnny Otis' R&B revue during the 1950s.
She has scored several hits over the decades such as The Wallflower (Dance With Me, Henry), Good Rockin' Daddy, Pushover, Fool That I Am, Don't Cry Baby and I Just Wanna Make Love To You.
James was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
The three-time Grammy Award winner, who has branched out to soul, jazz and blues, is still recording.
