An acclaimed American tenor who sang at the Met, La Scala and Covent Garden has died, a week after being hospitalized in an apparent suicide attempt.

A family spokeswoman confirmed the death of Jerry Hadley Wednesday at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

He was taken off life support two days ago.

The 55-year-old singer was found on the floor of his Clinton Corners home by state troopers on July 10, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to officials.

Hadley had filed for bankruptcy and was undergoing treatment for depression. Last year, he was arrested in Manhattan on a charge of driving while intoxicated, but prosecutors later dropped the case.

During a career as a world-class tenor, he sang works ranging from composer John Harbison's The Great Gatsby to Mozart's Cosi fan tutte.
