Michael, best known as the lead singer of the British '80s pop duo Wham!, will play the 90,000-seat stadium on June 9, three weeks after it hosts English soccer's FA Cup final.

"He's no stranger to this great stage, having performed at the old stadium both with Wham! at Live Aid and also as a solo artist, so this is a fitting first gig in the new stadium," Wembley managing director Alex Horne said in a statement.

The concert will be part of the 43-year-old Michael's summer stadium tour through Britain and continental Europe.

New stadium to host NFL, Olympics

The new Wembley replaces the historic stadium of the same name that was built in 1924 and demolished in 2002 to make room for the replacement.

Originally slated to open in August 2005, the new Wembley was forced to postpone several musical and sporting events due to a series of delays.

The British band Muse announced in December that it will play two dates at the revamped stadium on June 16 and 17.

In January, the U.S.-based National Football League announced it would hold its first-ever overseas regular-season game at Wembley, when the New York Giants play the Miami Dolphins in late October.

Wembley is also on tap to host events for the 2012 Olympics.
