It might have got snubbed at the Academy Awards this year, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens hopes to make up for it big time at next month's 25th anniversary MTV Movie Awards.

The latest installment of the wildly popular sci-fi franchise — it's already earned more than $2 billion US in worldwide box-office sales — will compete with Creed, Deadpool, Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Straight Outta Compton for movie of the year.

MTV announced the nominations for its April 10 awards gala via the online site Snapchat — a first for a national awards show.

The show will be pre-taped live-style across the Warner Bros. backlot on April 9, taking place outdoors across multiple locations, unlike most award shows, which air from a singular theater.

The 11 bids for The Force Awakens include multiple nominations for stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.

The MTV Movie Awards added two new categories this year: true story and documentary. Fans can vote for their favourites in all categories online.
