Though most think of Michael Palin as one of the hilarious members of Monty Python, the British actor, comedian and writer has also developed a reputation as a respected world traveller.

The 70-year-old Palin has crossed the globe many times over the past 30 years and shared his many treks with viewers and readers through his TV documentaries and travel writing.

This week, Palin is being honoured by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society with a gold medal for promoting geographic literacy.

He talked to CBC's Jelena Adzic about fond memories of Canada and offered up a musical salute.
