Singer Lady Gaga, seen in Washington in 2009, has become the first living person to rack up 10 million Facebook friends. (Manuel Balce Ceneta/Associated Press)Lady Gaga's myriad fans have pushed the pop sensation to a new social media milestone, with the U.S. entertainer becoming the first living person to rack up 10 million Facebook "friends."
In late June, British social-networking measurement website Famecount.com, which gauges online popularity, noted the chart-topping singer-songwriter had surged past U.S. President Barack Obama on Facebook and was approaching the 10 million fans mark.
The 24-year-old singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, then topped 10 million over the weekend (Obama, for instance, has nearly 9.7 million Facebook fans).
Currently on the road for her North American Monster Ball tour, Lady Gaga posted a short video message on her official website as well as her Facebook page acknowledging the fans — dubbed by the singer as her "little monsters" — that helped her achieve the new record.
"I love you guys so much," the singer says in the video.
"Thank you so much for all of your love and your support, and for sticking by me through the fame and the fame monster."
Lady Gaga's popularity also translates to other popular sites: she has more than 4.7 million followers on Twitter, nearly 37.5 million views on her official YouTube channel and more than 1.3 million friends on MySpace.
While the singer might be leaps and bounds ahead of the Facebook fan counts of some of her pop music contemporaries (e.g. Taylor Swift has 5.8 million and Justin Bieber has 6.4 million), she is still only in sixth place overall.
She continues to trail the fan tallies for Facebook pages dedicated to:
- Poker variation Texas Hold 'em (20.2 million).
- The late Michael Jackson (nearly 15 million).
- Online game Mafia Wars (12.8 million).
- Facebook itself (nearly 11.5 million).
- The animated TV show Family Guy (10.7 million).

FILM REVIEW: Men in Black 3 by Eli Glasner May. 25, 2012 11:40 AM Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back in the action sequel Men in Black 3, a third instalment of a series now 15 years old. Though new addition Josh Brolin manages some amazing mimicry as a younger version of Jones, the story doesn't measure up to the weird and wonderful charms of the original, says film reviewer Eli Glasner.

Talking about war May. 25, 2012 4:57 PM The public conversation around war has always been complex and thorny. How does Canada's military approach differ from that of other countries? Are we a society of peacekeepers or warriors? These are some of the questions that Noah Richler explores in his new book What We Talk About When We Talk About War.
