(Brian Jackson/Sundance Channel/Associated Press)Twitter, cellphone apps and interactive websites are among the recent cultural phenomena to earn nominations for this year's Webby Awards, the annual U.S.-based awards for the best in electronic media.
Twitter, the network service that confines users to posts of just 140 characters, is nominated for best practices and best social networking website, while cellphone app Foursquare is nominated for best mobile social networks and Texts from Last Night is named for best mobile entertainment.
The first feature film to premiere on mobile phones, Rage with Jude Law, Eddie Izzard and Judi Dench, has a nod for best online film or video drama.
The Webby Awards announced nominees from around the world in 70 categories on Tuesday.
There was plenty of star power among those vying for the honours including:
- Canadian actor Jim Carrey's official website for best celebrity site.
- DJ Shadow's celebrity website.
- Web talk show Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis.
- Wainy Days skit with Amanda Peet and David Wain.
Satirical website Funny or Die is a multiple nominee with items such as "Lindsay Lohan's eHarmony Profile" and "Protect Insurance Companies PSA" with Will Ferrell and Jon Hamm.
They are competing with viral hits like David After Dentist and The Muppets: Bohemian Rhapsody.
Among the Canadian nominees are the National Film Board's Waterlife website, an interactive site that engages users with the issue of water conservation in the Great Lakes. Associated with the film Waterlife, it is named in the educational and film category.
District 9, the sci-fi film made by Vancouver's Neill Blomkamp, also has a nomination in the film category for its website.
Isabella Rossellini's Green Porno, a set of shorts about insect mating habits, has multiple nominations for its web presence, as does Sundance Channel, which runs Green Porno.
Among the other multiple nominees are The Onion, BBC, New York Times, CollegeHumor and newcomes Crackle and Wonderwall.com.
The Webbys will be awarded in New York City on June 14 and victors must deliver a five-word acceptance speech.
