American entertainer Chris Brown has been charged with two felonies in connection with a February incident involving an unidentified victim, widely reported to be his pop-singer girlfriend, Rihanna.
According to court documents handed down Thursday morning in Los Angeles, Brown, 19, has been charged with assault and making criminal threats against a woman identified as "Robyn F." Rihanna's real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty.
Brown, a rising Hollywood actor as well as a singer and dancer, is currently free on $50,000 US bail. He appeared with his lawyer Thursday afternoon in a Los Angeles courtroom, where his arraignment on the charges was postponed to April 6.
Rihanna, 21, has remained out of the public eye since the incident, which allegedly took place in the early hours of Sunday, Feb. 8 — the same day as the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
According to a detective's affidavit, the couple got into a fight over a text message Brown received from another woman.
Brown pulled his car over and tried to push the victim out, but she was still wearing her seatbelt, Los Angeles police Det. De Shon Andrews wrote in the affidavit, filed as part of a search warrant request.
The affidavit also said Brown pushed the victim's head against the window, punched her with his right hand, and then continued driving while hitting her.
Police called to scene
According to the affidavit, the incident escalated when the two exited the vehicle and Los Angeles police were eventually called to the scene.
When officers arrived, they found the victim with visible injuries; she identified Brown as her attacker. He had left the scene, but turned himself in to authorities later that day and was arrested.
Brown and Rihanna had been seen attending a pre-Grammys gala in Beverly Hills on Saturday evening.
Both stars were slated to appear at the televised event, with Rihanna among those on the performance bill, but both cancelled hours before the show, forcing organizers to call in last-minute replacements. Both performers also cancelled a host of subsequent appearances and concerts.

FILM REVIEW: Men in Black 3 by Eli Glasner May. 25, 2012 11:40 AM Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back in the action sequel Men in Black 3, a third instalment of a series now 15 years old. Though new addition Josh Brolin manages some amazing mimicry as a younger version of Jones, the story doesn't measure up to the weird and wonderful charms of the original, says film reviewer Eli Glasner.
