Global TV in Toronto is eliminating its noon-hour television newscasts, with a loss of close to 40 jobs.

Canwest Global Communications Corp. spokesman John Douglas confirmed the cuts on Tuesday.

Canwest decided to eliminate the morning newscasts in November and then reviewed all of Global Toronto's operations, Douglas said.

In the course of that review, the company decided to cancel the noon newscast as well, he said.

He wouldn't give the exact number of layoffs, but said fewer than 40 employees would be affected.

Canwest Global announced in November it would cut five per cent of its workforce, about 560 jobs.

That included 210 jobs cut from Global and its other television operations. Cut were also to be made in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary.

Both newspaper and television revenues have been hurt by slumping advertising revenue and a continued poor economic outlook.

For the three months ended Nov. 30, 2008, Canwest Global reported that revenues increased two per cent to $886 million but the company suffered a net loss of $33 million.
