Big cuts are coming to Nova Scotia's biggest newspaper, CBC News has learned.

Staff in the Halifax Chronicle-Herald's news division have been told they're facing a $1.5-million cut.

The newspaper wants to find the savings immediately. The union was told Wednesday there will be buyouts and possibly layoffs.

About 103 people work for the news division across Nova Scotia.

The Chronicle-Herald is one of the few independently owned daily newspapers in Canada.
