National Geographic and Vanity Fair took home multiple trophies at the 43rd annual U.S. National Magazine Awards gala held in New York Thursday.
The venerable National Geographic took a trio of honours, including winning the prestigious general excellence award for its category (circulation of more than 2 million), for photojournalism (a series about malaria around the world) and for reporting (an article about China's entrepreneurial boom).
"While remaining true to traditions known to generations of readers, the magazine continues to inspire and amaze — with photography that reveals wondrous, and often threatened, corners of our planet, and reporting that is both intrepid and tough-minded," organizers said of the magazine in a citation.
Vanity Fair and celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz — in the news this week over the kerfuffle surrounding an upcoming cover of teen star Mylie Cyrus — picked up an award in the photo portfolio category for a spread depicting current Hollywood stars in scenes from classic films.
A second trophy, for profile-writing, went to the magazine for its piece on Pat Dollard, a former Hollywood agent-turned-documentarian who travelled to Iraq to make a pro-war film. Other winners included:

FILM REVIEW: Men in Black 3 by Eli Glasner May. 25, 2012 11:40 AM Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back in the action sequel Men in Black 3, a third instalment of a series now 15 years old. Though new addition Josh Brolin manages some amazing mimicry as a younger version of Jones, the story doesn't measure up to the weird and wonderful charms of the original, says film reviewer Eli Glasner.
