Sun Media Corp., owner of the Ottawa Sun, has launched English and French versions of its free daily tabloid 24 Hours in the Ottawa area.

Sun Media, a unit of Quebecor Media, printed 40,000 copies of its first issue on Wednesday.

The daily tabloid, featuring news and entertainment reporting in a brief, colourful format, is being distributed in news boxes, coffee shops and other locations in Ottawa and the Outaouais region, on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River.

24 Hours hit the streets two days after the Ottawa Citizen introduced its own tabloid, RushHour.

RushHour is a 12-page package of breaking, same-day news, entertainment and information that can be read online or downloaded to read while commuting.

The Citizen expects 60,000 readers for the tabloid format daily.

Local versions of 24 Hours are also published in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

The Ottawa edition shares resources with the Sun and has hired 24 new staff for the French and English versions.

"We're excited about the challenge of producing two products that are both fun and informative to read, available in both official languages, and best of all, free," editor Dave Pizer said in the Ottawa Sun.

The two papers have different content, but cover a range of local, national and international news, plus offer lifestyles, celebrity scoops and puzzles pages.

"The newspapers are designed to deliver information quickly for busy readers — typically in 20 minutes — and they will attract new readers to the print format," said Rick Gibbons, publisher and chief executive of 24 Hours.

The paper aims to develop new readers among morning commuters, he said.
