Courtney Love, once the wild front woman of the band Hole and widow of singer Kurt Cobain, is crediting actor Mel Gibson for her recovery from drug addiction.

The 42-year-old, who has been sober for 15 months, was talking about the release of her memoir on ABC’s Good Morning America  when she told the interviewer about Gibson’s intervention.

She said he showed up at her hotel room in Beverly Hills, Calif., one day as she was doing drugs with several men.

"Mel kept coming to the door with this cheesy grin going, 'Hi!"' Love said.

"I just kept looking at him going — I can't cuss — um, 'Blank off!' … I know him and he's a nice guy. It didn't matter who it was. It could have been Jesus. I didn't care," said the rocker-actress.

Love said the director of Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ was accompanied by an addiction counsellor. Gibson took the men out for a meal and left her alone with the counsellor.

Gibson has sought treatment for alcoholism after a drunk-driving arrest in July in which the actor berated the arresting officer and launched into an outburst against Jews.

He has since apologized for his behaviour, seeking forgiveness and also entering alcohol rehabilitation.

Love herself is no stranger to run-ins with the law. She was sentenced to 180 days at a drug treatment facility in September 2005 for violating probation in three criminal cases.

She is currently on probation on two unrelated drug charges.

Love and Gibson share the same publicist, Alan Nierob.

Love, who appeared in films such as Man on the Moon and The People v. Larry Flynt, admits to living a "wild pirate life," attending reform schools, living in foster homes and performing in strip clubs.

She married legendary Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in the early 1990s. They both battled drug addictions. She says his suicide in 1994 drove her further into her addictions.
