Actor Julianne Moore has been announced as one of the major new characters in the upcoming third film in the Hunger Games series.
Moore will play President Alma Coin in Mockingjay Part 1, which is based on the third book in author Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy. She leads a rebellion against series antagonist President Snow, played by Donald Sutherland.
Mockingjay Part 1 is currently scheduled for a November 2014 release, with Part 2 to follow in 2015.
"Official! Please welcome Julianne Moore as President Alma Coin to the cast of @TheHungerGames: Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2," tweeted the the Hunger Games Twitter account, with an attached picture of Moore.
Mockingjay split into two films
Moore is a four-time Academy Award nominee with several credits in film and television, including Boogie Nights, The Hours and The Kids Are All Right.
In the novel Mockingjay, Katniss describes Alma Coin as "fifty or so, with grey hair that falls in an unbroken sheet to her shoulders" with grey eyes that are "very pale, as if almost all the color has been sucked out of them. The colour of slush that you wish would melt away."
Catching Fire, the film adaptation of the second book in the series, is due for release Nov. 22, 2013. Academy Award-winner Jennifer Lawrence will reprise her role as protagonist Katniss Everdeen. Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Liam Hemsworth are among the high-profile supporting cast.
