The ceremony for this year's International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards is taking place in Toronto on June 25, but there are plenty of scheduled celebrations in the Greater Toronto Area leading up to the big gala.
Here's a rundown of some of the planned events.
IIFA Workshop: Music — Bringing Cinema Alive (11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.)
In this professional seminar, speakers Vishal Bhardwaj and the trio Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy offer insights into writing music for Indian cinema. The event will culminate with an interactive jam session where the composers and audience members create a live track.
Samsara: Feel the Flow in Toronto (2 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.) Taking place in the shadow of the Rogers Centre — where the IIFA gala will be held later in the day — this free arts festival will feature live music performances, including an Indo-Brazilian drum line, as well as dancing and a fashion show. The event will finish with the arrival of Indian film stars on the "green carpet" for the IIFA ceremony.
IIFA awards ceremony at the Rogers Centre (8 p.m.)
This is it, the glitzy, star-studded gala where India's biggest cinema stars will be celebrated with hardware.
IIFA ROCKS fashion show at Ricoh Coliseum (6:30 p.m.)
Hosted by Indian movie personality Saif Ali Khan, this show features a musical performance by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and international models displaying designs from India and Canada.
IIFA Film Festival
IIFA-nominated movies from 2011 as well as years past are screened at various theatres, including the Coliseum Mississauga, Cineplex Odeon Sheppard, Silvercity Brampton and Cineplex Odeon First Markham Place. Click here for more information.
IIFA weekend press conference
Festival organizers, likely flanked by one or two film stars, kick off the big weekend with a media conference at the Fairmont Royal York in downtown Toronto.
IIFA Buzz Events
Celebrate South Asia and the World (7 a.m. - 10 p.m.)
This celebration in Gage Park and Garden Square in Brampton includes a bazaar and farmers' market, parade and three stages' worth of music and dancing.
Albion Islington Fusion of Taste Festival (11 a.m. - 9 p.m.)
Circus acts, amusement rides, buskers and the Shaimak Davar Toronto Dance Team await revellers at this fair near Albion Road and Islington Avenue.
Markham Bollywood Extravaganza (noon - 10 p.m.)
Taking place near the Markham Civic Centre, this event will feature a variety of South Asian entertainment, including fusion performances and an authentic bazaar, as well as a Kidzone.
IIFA Buzz Fest Brampton Festival
The city of Brampton plays host to this three-day party dedicated to Indian cinema. The events, spread out over Gage Park, Garden Square and Central Public School, include fashion shows and various musical and dance performances. Indian film star Bipasha Basu will be on hand June 17 to unveil the Brampton Walk of Fame plaque in Garden Square. Click here for more information.
Markham South Asian Mela (4 p.m. - 8 p.m.)
This neighbourhood event at Featherstone Park features authentic South Asian cuisine as well as the Miss Markham Bollywood Pageant.
Bollywood Spice fundraising dinner (7 p.m.)
This evening in support of local charities Big Brothers Big Sisters, Ernestine's Women Shelter and Youth Without Shelter will feature singer Prita Chhabra, Egyptian belly dancers and an appearance by Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. Click here for more information.
