The Catalan-language movie, a post-Spanish Civil War drama, also took honours for filmmaker Agusti Villaronga, who won best director and best adapted screenplay.
The film also saw several cast members earn kudos, including Nora Navas (actress), Laia Marull (supporting actress) and young stars Francesc Colomer (promising actor) and Marina Comas (promising actress).
Remaining categories were divided between a handful of other films at the 25th annual Goyas gala in Madrid.
As expected, Spanish heartthrob Javier Bardem won the best actor category for his turn in the gritty drama Biutiful. It was a fifth Goya for the actor.
"I receive [the award] as a warm hug and support from my colleagues, which is the most important for an actor," Bardem said in accepting the prize.
"I dedicate it to my wife and son for awakening my heart and smile everyday," he added. His actress wife, Penelope Cruz, gave birth to the couple's first child in January.
Kudos for Buried
The thriller Buried, which starred Canadian Ryan Reynolds, earned filmmaker Rodrigo Cortes a Goya for best editing. The claustrophobic film also earned awards for Chris Sparling's original screenplay and for its sound.
Royal drama The King's Speech nabbed the Goya for best European film. Earlier in the evening, it was crowned the top winner at the U.K.'s prominent movie honours, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards.
The Last Circus, a film from Spanish Academy president and cult filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia, began the evening with 15 nominations, but ended with just a pair of wins in technical categories (special effects and hair and makeup).
However, de la Iglesias was cheered by more than 200 protesters gathered outside the Goyas gala for his recent resignation from the academy, a decision made to protest the government's passing of a controversial anti-download law.

FILM REVIEW: Men in Black 3 by Eli Glasner May. 25, 2012 11:40 AM Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back in the action sequel Men in Black 3, a third instalment of a series now 15 years old. Though new addition Josh Brolin manages some amazing mimicry as a younger version of Jones, the story doesn't measure up to the weird and wonderful charms of the original, says film reviewer Eli Glasner.
