(Reed Saxon/Associated Press)A Los Angeles judge has outlined the terms of troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan's early release from rehab, which followed a shortened jail stint.

Though the 24-year-old actor was not required to attend Wednesday's 10-minute hearing, Superior Court Judge Elden Fox ordered her to attend psychotherapy and addiction counselling sessions several times a week until November, when her case will come up again in court.

The Mean Girls and Freaky Friday star must also submit to random drug and alcohol testing at least twice a week.

Failure to comply with the sessions or testing could result in another jail term, he added.

However, if Lohan complies, passes the tests and attends all the required sessions, Fox said he will remove her from supervised probation. He also dismissed two drug counts dating from 2007.

The judge, who revealed that he had approved Lohan's release Tuesday at about 5 p.m. local time, said he based his decisions on his review of her case and the recommendations of her doctors.

Jailed after violating probation terms

U.S. media first reported that Lohan had been discharged from the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The actor, who was jailed for violating her probation in a 2007 case of impaired driving and drug possession, served 14 days of her 90-day jail sentence.

Her reduced time was expected, due to overcrowding in California jails and the good behaviour of inmates with no criminal records serving time for non-violent offences.

After her release from prison on July 2, she was immediately taken to the inpatient rehabilitation program at the UCLA facility, where she was to have remained for three months.

The prosecutor in the case against Lohan revealed recently that health-care professionals were recommending an early release and continued treatment as an outpatient.

The news came amid reports that, in recent years, Lohan had been wrongly diagnosed with several disorders for which she had been taking medication that may have affected her behaviour.

The former child star made headlines for her multiple run-ins with the law over drug and alcohol offences, as well as for bizarre behaviour at public events.

"She has changed," Shawn Chapman Holley, Lohan's lawyer, said Wednesday.

"She's healthy. She's clear-headed. She is positive at looking forward."

Holley confirmed that Lohan would not attend a planned Wednesday screening of her latest film, Robert Rodriguez's Machete, but said her client is eager to resume working.
