There will be no public memorial for Toronto-born actor Corey Haim in Los Angeles, his friend Corey Feldman has announced.

Writing on his blog, Feldman said he has cancelled plans for a memorial out of consideration for Haim's mother.

Judy Haim asked for the cancellation believing she would not be able to handle the stress while she was grieving, he wrote.

"After weeks of consideration and planning, the ultimate decision has been made by Corey's mother Judy Haim to not go forward with a public memorial service," Feldman wrote. "Instead we will have a very small private dinner with just a few close friends in L.A."

He thanked fans for their outpouring of support for Haim's friends and family.

Haim, star of The Lost Boys and Lucas, died at age 38 after collapsing in his mother's Beverly Hills apartment last month.

Feldman had starred with him on the reality TV show, The Two Coreys.

In his blog post, Feldman castigated the press and the negative reactions he has received online over recent reports that Haim may have received illegal prescriptions.

On Tuesday, California Attorney General Jerry Brown called Haim a "poster child" for prescription drug abuse and detailed how the former child actor obtained prescriptions for more than 500 pills from seven different doctors.

No cause of death has yet been released for Haim, though the coroner found he had an enlarged heart, pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs.

Feldman said he understands why Haim's mother would not want a public memorial in the face of the bad news about Haim's struggles with drugs.

"I too understand her not wanting to face the barrage of negative press that comes from the public spectacle," he wrote.

"This has been very difficult for me. I am trying very hard to stay positive after losing so much in the last nine months."

Feldman said he cried for two weeks after his friend's death, but then was hounded by the press after finding the strength to go out again.

Feldman said his band Truth Movement will tour later this year.
