George Clooney, lauded for starring in the Oscar-nominated Up in the Air and as organizer of the recent Hope for Haiti Now telethon, has also garnered a more dubious distinction: star of the worst movie ever made, according to a British movie magazine.

Empire Magazine has released its tally of terrible films and Hollywood heartthrob Clooney's much maligned portrayal of The Dark Knight in 1997's Batman and Robin rocketed to the top of the list, according to voters' rankings.

Directed by Joel Schumacher, Batman and Robin co-starred Chris O'Donnell as the caped crusader's sidekick Robin, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy.

"Gaining nearly three times as many votes as the next entry, this was a runaway loser," Empire staff wrote.

"From the neon design to the overblown script to the infamous Batnipples, it's become a byword for franchise-killing and bad movie-making."

Clooney, an Academy Award winner who scored a best actor nod on Tuesday for Up in the Air, regularly pokes fun at his less successful roles, including his turn in the bat suit.

The 2000 sci-fi film Battlefield Earth, starring John Travolta, Forest Whitaker and Barry Pepper, landed in the runner-up slot.

Canadian actor Mike Myers scored third place on the ignoble tally for 2008's outrageous comedy The Love Guru.

Empire's list was compiled from the results of an online survey of its readers.

Other films that made the top 50 include Guy Ritchie's remake of Swept Away (showcasing then-wife Madonna), the video game-inspired, Jean-Claude Van Damme-starring debacle Street Fighter and comic book adaptations Catwoman and Spider-Man 3.
