Up is the sixth Pixar film overall and the animation house's third consecutive title to nab a Golden Tomato. (Disney/Pixar)A high-flying, brilliantly coloured Pixar animated adventure and a gritty war tale following bomb-diffusers in Iraq have been named 2009's Golden Tomato Award-winners by popular movie review site RottenTomatoes.com.

The website, which compiles reviews from movie critics of all levels, named Pixar tale Up and The Hurt Locker as last year's best-reviewed films.

Up won the best reviewed film in wide release after registering 98 per cent positive reviews.

The latest Pixar win is the acclaimed company's sixth Golden Tomato honour, and its third consecutive win, after 2008's Wall-E and 2007's Ratatouille.

"Every year since we started doing this award, if they've got a movie, they win," said Rotten Tomatoes editor-in-chief Matt Atchity.

"They just consistently turn out really good quality movies."

Some of the other top-rated wide-release films — like Up in the Air, Inglourious Basterds and Fantastic Mr. Fox — have been frequent nominees during the current film award season.

But the Rotten Tomatoes list also reflects a much more broadly appealing collection of movies, including genres like horror (Zombieland, Drag Me To Hell ) and action-adventure (Star Trek ) that are not often included in the main categories of traditional tallies.

The Hurt Locker won the title of best reviewed film in limited release, with an approval rating of 97 per cent. Rounding out the top five were several high-profile documentaries: Anvil! The Story of Anvil, about the enduring Canadian heavy metal band, talent competition tale Afghan Star, the much touted dolphin-hunt movie The Cove and the artistic self-portrait The Beaches of Agnes.

On the flip side, site operators also announce the title that had the dubious honour of being the year's worst-reviewed film, also known as the Moldy Tomato Award.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, a video game adaptation starring Canadian actress Kristin Kreuk, snagged the distinction with only four per cent of reviewers giving the action thriller the thumb's up.

Other titles that fared poorly included the sex comedy Miss March, the slapstick comedy Old Dogs, the suspense film Whiteout and the oddball romantic comedy All About Steve.
