Television actress Carly Pope was one of four people injured in a bizarre carjacking in Vancouver on Tuesday.
(Dan Steinberg/Associated Press) Carly and Kris Pope, siblings who are both actors, were the victims of a bizarre carjacking attempt in downtown Vancouver on Tuesday morning, CBC News has confirmed, and police say charges have now been laid.
Carly Pope, 29, suffered a broken rib and two cracked vertebrae, while Kris Pope, 33, suffered severe injuries to his ankle, when a pedestrian tried to steal their vehicle and crashed it into the new CBC building on West Georgia Street.
Vancouver police have confirmed David Fomradas, 31, of Alberta is facing eight charges in relation to the incident, including:
- Theft over $5,000.
- Kidnapping.
- Two charges of aggravated assault.
- Two charges of assault with a weapon.
- Dangerous driving.
- Mischief to property.
The Popes and one other unidentified victim were treated in hospital following the incident and have since been released. Fomradas was also treated in hospital and remains in police custody.
Home for the holidays
Carly Pope, originally from Vancouver, was home from Los Angeles for the holidays, her father, Dale Pope, told CBC News.
She rose to fame in the series Popular and starred in the last season of the hit series 24. Her brother has also had numerous TV and movie roles.
The two were in Kris Pope's BMW on Tuesday morning when a pedestrian leaped onto the hood of the vehicle and started yelling at them to run him over, according to witnesses.
After Kris Pope left the vehicle, the pedestrian allegedly jumped behind the wheel of the car and reversed it through traffic, dragging the pair and one other person along with him, and hitting three other vehicles before crashing into the CBC building.
Police and ambulance attendants place one of the injured people onto a stretcher outside the CBC building on West Georgia Street in Vancouver. (Lien Yeung/CBC)"My daughter was thrown from the car at some point," said Dale Pope. "My son, who grabbed on to the door of the car to try and stop this person from kidnapping his sister, was thrown from the vehicle and received quite severe injuries to his ankle, his arm and his face.
"My daughter suffered a broken rib and two cracked vertebrae and some stitches to her face.
"We feel very blessed that they're with us because this person could have had a weapon," he added. "I don't know if he did or did not, but he could have had a weapon and used it on my daughter, or my son, or both. A lot of people were jeopardized yesterday by this person."

- Spider-Man trailer: fresh take or more of the same?by Arts Online Feb. 7, 2012 5:15 PM Spider-Man? Yes. Amazing? Maybe. The first full-length trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man -- the reboot of the comic-turned-movie trilogy -- has been released. But considering the previous movie franchise ended a mere five years ago and that we've been bombarded with stories about the troubled Broadway musical adaptation since then, this reboot does beg the question: Do we really need to revisit Spider-Man?
