Martin Scorsese's horror-thriller Shutter Island will join Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.

Scorsese's latest, a fourth film by the acclaimed director starring actor Leonardo DiCaprio, will make its debut at the Berlinale, festival organizers announced Tuesday.

The premiere will come just in advance of the movie's Feb. 19 North American release.

News that Polanski's film, a political thriller starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan, would have its premiere in Berlin emerged earlier this week, when Hollywood studio Summit Entertainment announced plans to bring the film to North American theatres in early 2010.

While Shutter Island will not be vying for the festival's coveted Golden Bear prize, The Ghost Writer will be in competition.

Also among the first batch of competitors unveiled Tuesday are films by European art-house directors, including:

  • Bal (Honey), dir. Semih Kaplanoglu (Turkey/Germany).
  • Der Rauber (The Robber), dir. Benjamin Heisenberg (Austria / Germany).
  • Na Putu (On the Path), dir. Jasmila Zbanic (Bosnia and Herzegovina/Austria/Germany/Croatia).
  • Shekarchi (The Hunter), dir. Rafi Pitts (Germany/Iran).

Altogether, organizers will select 26 films for the festival's competition lineup. Further titles will be announced in January.

Also screening out of competition at Berlin will be the Indian film My Name Is Khan, starring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

The 60th Berlin International Film Festival takes place Feb. 11-21.
