The Canadian TV broadcasters of the 2010 Winter Olympics have announced plans to air the Games live in movie theatres across Central and Western Canada.

Perhaps taking a cue from the success of groups like the Metropolitan Opera and World Wrestling Entertainment, CTV announced its English-language and French-language RDS coverage of the Vancouver Games will be beamed to Cineplex theatres, organizers announced on Wednesday.

Cineplex, which operates movie complexes from Quebec through British Columbia, will carry the simulcasts in 64 venues, with each dedicating one auditorium per day from Feb. 12-28 to high-definition Olympic broadcasts.

Cineplex is charging $9.95 for one-day tickets, while unlimited access for the duration of the Games will cost $29.95.

Theatre chains in Canada and abroad have seen tremendous success in expanding beyond movies to host live simulcasts of high-profile, high-definition productions.

Recent offerings have included performances by New York's famed Metropolitan Opera, the National Ballet of Canada's The Nutcracker, Stratford Shakespeare Company's production of Caesar and Cleopatra, special pay-per-view World Wrestling Entertainment bouts, National Hockey League games, as well as benefit concerts and similar events.
