It will take a Swiss court two or three weeks to decide whether Roman Polanski's latest bail offer provides enough of a guarantee he will not flee the country, a court official said Tuesday.

Switzerland is still evaluating a U.S. request to extradite the film director and deliberations could drag on for months if Polanski launches an appeal.

Polanski, 76, is waiting out the extradition decision in a jail cell after Swiss courts rejected two earlier requests for bail. He was arrested Sept. 26 after arriving in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award at a film festival.

Polanski is wanted in the U.S. after a conviction for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. He fled the country in 1979 on the eve of his sentencing and has refused to return.

His earlier bail requests were turned down on the grounds that he is at high risk to flee the country. He had offered his Alpine chalet apartment as collateral and suggested electronic monitoring as conditions of his freedom.

His latest appeal is believed to also include a cash guarantee.
