With the U.S. Academy Awards deadline approaching, a flock of international film bodies have announced their country's official candidates for foreign language Oscar consideration.

China has tapped Forever Enthralled, the latest from noted filmmaker Chen Kaige, as its entry — making it the director's third time being chosen (after Farewell My Concubine and The Promise).

Other entries include:

  • Philippines - Grandfather Is Dead, directed by Soxie Topacio.
  • Chile - Dawson, Isla 10, directed by Miguel Littin.
  • Venezuela - Libertado morales, el justiciero, directed by Efterpi Charalambidis.
  • Bolivia - Zona Sur (Southern Zone), directed by Juan Carlos Valdivia.
  • Switzerland - Home, directed by Ursula Meier.
  • Luxembourg - Refractaire, directed by Nicolas Steil.
  • Turkey - I Saw the Sun, directed by Mahsun Kirmizigul.
  • Netherlands - The Silent Army, directed by Jean van de Velde.

Meanwhile, Austrian film officials, who earlier had expressed frustration over Germany's selection of Austrian director Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon as its entry, have also made their choice.

Austria's official pick is For a Moment of Freedom, directed by Iranian-Austrian filmmaker Arash T. Riahi. The movie was produced by the same Vienna, Paris and Berlin firms behind The White Ribbon.

The deadline for the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences foreign language category is Oct. 1.

Oscar nominations will be announced Feb. 2, with the annual awards gala to follow on March 7.
