A weekend-long memorial screening of seven of Anthony Minghella's films was held on England's Isle of Wight.

Wednesday will mark the first anniversary of the sudden death of the late Oscar-winning director.

The Minghella Movie Marathon opened Friday night in Newport with a screening of the director's début feature film Truly, Madly, Deeply (1990), hosted by the director's sister Gioia Minghella, and introduced by actors Alan Rickman and Michael Maloney.

Saturday's screenings opened with Minghella's last completed work, the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency (2008).

It was followed by The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), the documentary Climbing Cold Mountain (2002) and an evening black-tie gala screening of The English Patient (1996), which won nine Academy Awards including best director for Minghella.

Sunday's program featured Breaking and Entering (2006), Cold Mountain followed by an interview with actor Jude Law, and Mr. Wonderful (1993).

Actors Martin Freeman, Kevin Whateley and Nikki Amuka-Bird, and jazz musician Guy Barker also attended the weekend's events.

Minghella grew up in Ryde on the Isle of Wight where his family still operates an ice cream business.

Gioia Minghella said she hoped the festival will become an annual event in her brother's memory.

Minghella died March 18, 2008, after undergoing surgery the previous week for cancer of the tonsils and neck.
