A new lawsuit over film piracy, one of several launched in the past two years by Hollywood studios, is set to go to court in China on Nov. 29.

The Motion Picture Association has filed the suit against Jeboo.com and internet café Shanghai East on behalf of five Hollywood studios, lawyer Frank Rittman said Friday.

The studios — Walt Disney Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures — allege the Shanghai-based website and café were sharing illegal copies of recently released movies, including Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

They have demanded 3.2 million yuan ($430,000) in compensation and damages.

Jeboo.com denied the allegations, saying it has a practice of using licensed copies of movies.

Jeboo.com claims to be China's biggest movie download provider, with a database of nearly 30,000 movies and TV series.

The MPA estimates 90 per cent of DVDs in China are pirated and says film piracy cost U.S. studios $244 million US in 2005.

The same five studios won a lawsuit in September against a Beijing company selling pirated films. A Chinese court awarded damages of 192,000 yuan ($25,650).

Last year, several studios successfully sued the Chinese website Sohu.com and won damages of nearly 1.1 million yuan ($140,000).
