In another case of Hollywood mining old television to make new movies, reports have surfaced that actor Eddie Murphy has signed on for a big-screen remake of TV series Fantasy Island.

Murphy — known for portraying outrageous, loud-mouth characters as well as his penchant for playing multiple characters in one film — will once again submit to special effects artists so he can tackle several different roles in the family-oriented Fantasy Island remake, according to the industry publication Hollywood Reporter.

Actor Eddie Murphy, seen here in a scene from Dreamgirls, has taken roles in movies ranging from 1980s buddy-cop comedies to family-friendly fare like the Doctor Dolittle franchise. The new project is set to be a comedy that reunites Murphy with the screenwriting team behind his last film, the critically maligned but surprising box office success, Norbit.

A director or scheduled release date has not yet been announced.

The former comedian turned actor is one of Hollywood's most famous faces, with a resume that ranges from 1980s action comedies like Beverly Hills Cop and family fare like the Doctor Dolittle franchise to his recent acclaimed turn in the movie musical Dreamgirls.

ABC-TV's Fantasy Island was a series that ran from 1978 to 1984 and starred Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize. Each week, visitors would descend on the mysterious, titular island — a resort somewhere in the Pacific Ocean — to have their fantasies, however improbable, fulfilled.
