The American Music Awards nominations are dominated by female acts, with Britain’s Adele leading the pack with four.

Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Katy Perry, Rihanna and The Band Perry, with lead singer Kimberly Perry, each have a strong showing with three nominations.

Stratford, Ont.-born Justin Bieber earned just one nomination this year, for best pop or rock singer.

Adele, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift all have nominations for artist of the year, with only rapper Lil Wayne to represent the men.

Adele is currently taking a hiatus from singing, to allow her vocal cords to heal after straining them on an ambitious touring schedule. Her 21, the bestselling album of the year, is nominated for best album.

The Rolling in the Deep singer is in the running for favourite female artist, best adult contemporary artist as well as artist of the year.

She’s not the only British import on the AMA list, with Mumford and Sons earning a nod in the best alternative act category.

Chris Brown continues his comeback with AMA nominations for best album for F.A.M.E. and best male R&B artist – a category that has him competing with Usher and Trey Songz.

Bruno Mars, Beyonce, country singer Jason Aldean, hip hop artists Kanye West, Pitbull and LMFAO and Nicki Minaj each scored two nominations.

The winners are determined by fan voting online and will be announced Nov. 20 in Los Angeles.

The AMAs award ceremony has become notorious in recent years for its extreme performances – so far Katy Perry and Pitbull are to take to the stage.
