The latest short story from Pulitzer-winning author Jennifer Egan is emerging 140 characters at a time via Twitter.

Egan's spy thriller Black Box will be published in Monday's issue of the New Yorker magazine. Before then, however, the magazine's fiction staff is releasing the story via updates from its Twitter account @NYerFiction.

Egan's story began unfurling via tweets on Thursday night.

The approximately 8,500-word story — which revolves around a character introduced in her 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit From the Goon Squad — is being sent out on the popular social media app each evening between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET over the course of 10 nights.

The magazine is also posting a summary of each evening's stream of tweets on its Page-Turner blog.

"I had a sense it could work for a spy story," Egan, who admitted she is not an avid Twitter user, told the New York Times this week.

"I'm just interested in serialization in fiction," she said. "I'm fascinated by it. I love the 19th-century novels. I'm interested in ways to bring that back to fiction."

Egan earned praise for A Visit From the Goon Squad's unconventional format, which includes linked stories presented out of sequence as well as a section structured as a PowerPoint presentation. Her fourth novel, it also won the fiction category of the U.S. National Book Critics Circle Award.
